Exercising during periods!? Sounds counterintuitive, right!?
Well, read on..you are up for a surprise!
Exercising during periods provides a host of benefits! When you exercise, the body secretes hormones and neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, etc. These hormones (also known as happy hormones) play a very important role in improving the overall psychological mood of a person. Exercise is hence a great mood elevator and can even help people come out of even depression.
Apart from this, physical activity increases the overall alertness and energy levels and is definitely a feel-good factor! It also reduces the bloating induced during the menstrual cycle. One could perform weight training, cardiovascular activities, yoga, etc during the period.
However, it is extremely important to stay well hydrated and also follow proper menstrual hygiene! Further, certain highly strenuous exercises such as kickboxing, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), etc are best avoided.
If the stomach cramps are too severe, or if there is severe nausea or dizziness, exercises can be avoided for that day.
It is perfectly alright to exercise during the periods. The only thing to remember is not to overdo it and provide adequate rest to your body! But this holds true, even when a lady is not on her periods..in fact, this holds true for every gender!
