Diarrhea or watery stool can occur because of many reasons – bacterial or viral infection, antibiotics, food intolerances such as lactose intolerance, parasites, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), other gastrointestinal issues (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, etc)
Diarrhea causes dehydration & loss of electrolytes; it is hence important to drink ample amount of water and also replenish the lost electrolytes. Banana is rich in potassium thereby replenishing electrolytes and is recommended during diarrhea. It is also rich in fiber & complex carbs and is easy on the stomach. ORS Solution (Sugar + Salt) is yet another simple, yet effective method to replenish the lost electrolytes and also hydrates the body
Our small intestine and large intestine has beneficial bacterial called gut bacteria that aids in digestion. Antibiotic drugs, food poisoning etc can sometimes kill these beneficial bacteria. This too can lead to indigestion and diarrhea. Milk and milk products are best avoided during diarrhea, however, yogurt is rich in beneficial bacteria and can help bring respite to diarrhea
Probiotics of Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium are helpful in restoring the gut bacteria levels and helps in treating diarrhea. Darolac & Bifilac are some of the OTC (Over the counter) probiotic capsules.
However, if diarrhea lasts for more than 3 days, then it may imply more serious complications such as IBD, gastrointestinal issues etc. It is highly recommended to consult a medical practitioner in such a case
